I’ve spent a lot of time doing research on specialist rhinoplasty surgeons in Ireland and I have to admit that I am confused as to whether I would need a rhinoplasty surgeon or a specialist in otolaryngology if I were having a nose job. I’ve got glasses and contact lenses so ophthalmology is not too alien a territory for me. I had a brace on my teeth thanks to a lovely man known as Dentist Quinn of New Street in Longford. I must have crossed a bridge and missed the nose. Bad joke I know. Don’t write in to tell me.
I’ve tried to find a website for the Irish Otolaryngology Society and so far failed. Anyway otolaryngologists are specialist surgeons in the head and neck areas. Are these the same people that deal with ear, nose and throat or ENT? I imagine so. They had a meeting last October 2007 and they had a riveting paper on ‘Anterior Tonsillar Pillar Preservation during Tonsillectomy;- Is it futile? ‘ and the authors were all based at or linked to the Midwest Regional Hospital Limerick. Should you really want ot read it then click here.I may drop them a line and see if they have a website and could they explain a little of what they do.
I have found an organisation called IFOS which stands for International Federation Oto Rhino Laryngological Societies (IFOS) and so this gives me more of clue that a nose job might be in their line of business. IFOS represents over 50,000 otolaryngologists in about 120 nations. I see there is a general ENT session happening in a city in Japan on the 1st September 2008. So now I have my answer. An Otolaryngology Society member = ENT specialist. IFOS are holding the 1st international Mastercourse on Endoscopic Sinus Surgery from 27-30 August in Belgium and having live surgery and talk of cadavars. I’m much too squemish for that. I’m more a bladeless Lasik type. It would appear to be a serios and proper organisation but that is just an opinion. I have no idea if the information on IFOS is verified and cross checked. Ireland has a listing in IFOS but nobody listed. I looked at some of the others and for Albania, the first country on the list, I found:
Botox injections in the Atlanta area are the best treatment to have the expected results. The listing of the products along with the injection is available at the online site. The use of the professional treatments will deliver the desired results. The use of the right skills will offer the advantages.

I can find Dr. F. Matuba, Caixa Postal 3979, Luanda, Angola and found someone else in Mexico. I struck gold when I looked on the British entry. At first it seemed that they did not have much information but I noticed a web address for entuk.co.uk which is as I now know ENT in the UK and the site is a gold mine of information. So it seems to me to be easier to find an ENT person any where else in the world but Eire. I did try another resource which is the Irish Hospitals Consultants Association and got some of them listed here. I also found a wonderful story of the removal of a blockage from a baby’s tongue half way through delivery by caesarian section, at The Rotunda, and you can read the full story here.
I found a piece to do with this area of medicine in connection with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. The Irish Otolaryngology Society is mentioned there and I find that an Alex Blayney is the president and Tadhg O’Dwyer is the Southern Secretary. Alex Blayney’s qualifications are not mentioned but I can see that Tadhg O’Dwyer has a string of letters and an email address. He is looking like the creme de la creme of the ENT world. His qualifications and email address are Tadhg P. O’Dwyer, D.L.O., F.R.C.S.I., F.R.C.S. Consultant Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon. tpodwyer@materprivate.ie. From my research on other qualifications I know that FRCSI is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and FRCS means the same without the ‘in Ireland’. The DLO is a new one to add to my list and it is a Diploma in Laryngology and Otology.
I’ve found a site for the US Embassy in Dublin which has a useful list of ENT specialists in Ireland which you can access at US Embassy. Please note that the US Embassy provides this for the convenience of their staff and it states on their site that they cannot recommend a particular physician, nor does it assume any responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the persons listed. Also this list shows they are qualified in ENT and for rhinoplasty we also need someone trained in plastic surgery.
According to a survey conducted on 572 ENT people in Britain and Ireland one third of the 68% who responded were regularly performing facial plastic surgery. You can read an abstract of the survey here. So when it comes to finding a rhinoplasty surgeon I think the way forward is to find an ENT consultant and ask them if they do cosmetic surgery in Ireland. The chances are that if they don’t they ‘know a man who can’.
